Over the past 15 years, the Centre for Early Childhood Development has:

  • Trained 200 early childhood development supervisors in Financial Management.
  • Trained 168 national early childhood development leaders on the Certificate Programme in Early Childhood Development (ECD) Leadership and Management.
  • Trained over 400 community-based early childhood development practitioners in Leadership and Management of ECD programmes.
  • Trained 40 early childhood development practitioners to teach on the national Reception Year programme.
  • Trained 240 early childhood development practitioners from the Northern Cape province on the national ECD pilot project.
  • Trained 33 early childhood development practitioners from the Western Cape province on the national ECD pilot project.
  • Assisted with the training of 50 early childhood development practitioners from the KwaZulu-Natal province on the national ECD pilot project.
  • Trained 30 young women on the Higher Certificate in ECD (Level 5) and placed them in jobs.
  • Trained 333 educators on the National Certificate in ECD (Level 4).
  • Trained 450 preschool Governing Body members in the nine provinces of South Africa.
  • Trained 3,582 adults in combating HIV and AIDS in the nine provinces of South Africa.
  • Placed 629 KidSmart Early Learning computers in ECD sites across the nine provinces and trained 1200 teachers on the education software.
  • Served on the Minister of Education’s Co-ordinating Committee on Early Childhood Development (CCECD) and the National Committee on Teacher Education Policy (COTEP).
  • Responded to over 1,000 requests for resource materials and information annually, through our Early Childhood Development Helpline, ASK CECD * Been appointed as a contributing partner to the United Nations Education, Science and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO)
  • Been awarded the Presidential Award for Education Excellence in the Early Childhood Development category
  • Been appointed by the European Union/Department of Education to identify and survey 24,000ECD sites around the country.
  • Received a productivity merit Award from the National Productivity Institute (NPI) of South Africa.
  • Has been awarded founder member status by the Proudly South African Campaign.
  • Written the National ECD guidelines for the National Department of Social Development.
  • Developed an Integrated ECD Plan for Education Minister Ms Naledi Pandor.
  • Supported fifteen ECD training providers extensively in organisational development.
  • Channeled R4,9 million to 20 ECD training providers over the past seven years.
  • Been chosen as a runner up in 2004 for the Mail & Guardian Investing in the Future Awards for our IBM KidSmart Early Learning Programme.
  • Been awarded the 2005 African ICT Achievers Award, Civil Society category, for our IBM KidSmart Early Learning Programme.
  • Been awarded Impumelelo Innovations Gold Award in 2005 for the ECD Enrichment Centre Project that established six ECD Enrichment Centres in five disadvantaged communities around the Cape Town metropolitan.
  • Implemented the first National ECD Awareness Week, 1 – 8 June 2006 in which 8,052 children and 7,014 community members attended ECD awareness events, 170 ECD practitioners benefited from training events, and advocacy and policy issues were highlighted in national media and debate.
